Possible reduction of half of all expenses 2012
Possible reduction of half of all expenses is the realization of an idea borns in the current “crisis” period in which many people are forced to participate while a substantial group get further to profit through the pain of others.
Thanks to history we have knowed many froms of crisis. But is in the present one, the global debt crisis, in which we are being direct victims of a continuous and dying informative bombing with the threat, that now is a fact, of posible and necessary reductions. Reduce, reuse, recycle, save costs and resources. Citizens’ movement stant in front of this discouraging scene -the economic management of the different public administrations in most countries- suspect of hiding and try to manipulate information by “the powerful” and the medias. But however, and due to factors such as education, much of the community is increasingly critical to these social elements, not accepting the current capitalist system configuration. [...].
How to make ends meet? Unfortunately many people suffer this problem and with a global context so bleak, what will happen with the Art and Culture? What will be done about them to the current possible reduction of half of all expenses? Abrupt current situation, considering that even in economic good times were required large doses of patience to work when you are an artist with many ideas and dreams, but without the "godfather" and few resources.
I think the world needs to change consequentially while continuing to invest in items that enrich the human being and also gives meaning to existence as Culture. An uncultivated society can not advance. If there are so many possible reductions I wonder, what sense are the astronomical salaries of politicians? In my opinion they could avoid many unnecessary costs, allowing with it to continue with investment in cultural projects of public utility.
In 1843 a Frenchman notary named Leclerc performed experiments about the legibility of continuous text, publishing a booklet entitled Possible reduction of half of all printing costs. The analysis of this text reveals immediately that the notary reasoned as a reader (which is right), almost as a linguist, but not as a printer.
Leclerc realized of five points:
- The reader guesses rather than read, the child is a prime example: he or she seeks divine.
- Half of a word, and sometimes the fourth part, is enough to guess it whole.
- If this word is missing, it would be guessed by the concatenation of the preceding and the next word.
- Almost all of the readers only read the top of the lines.
- The top of the lines, with their capital letters and their accents, is sufficient for a ordinary and fast reading.
Leclerc concluded its investigations with the evidence that if we admit the five above-mentioned facts, the bottom part of the line is useless. In this way it will save half of the cost of printing, especially paper (space) and ink[1].
Possible reduction of half of all expense materializes through a monochrome production of small paper format. It is a reflection of the times we live, a tribute to simplicity, both the concept and the formalization of the means used. Lecler’s experiences guide in this case my own quest where still alive some personal interests to a free spirituality and its relation to new technologies, as well as the interaction between image and writing. My artist work includes some references to the "simplification" in the three pieces: Sevilla ¡Ozú que calo!, No tengo ni pa bragas and Toi de pintor de brocha gorda, where also reflects about the artist's production, his difficult to create and the imperative of survival which often forces him to exercise other professions.
